How Does Invisalign Work?

You probably have heard of Invisalign and how it can help strengthen your teeth. If you know that you need to correct your teeth's alignment, but are dreading the idea of getting traditional braces, then you may be considering Invisalign.

But how does it work exactly? And, is it the right treatment for you?

Here's what you should know.

What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that helps correct dental alignment issues such as:

  • Overbite and underbite
  • Overcrowded teeth
  • Open bite and crossbite

The treatment consists of clear aligners that are custom-made to fit your teeth. These aligners gradually reshape your teeth to bring them to the correct position. These plastic trays will be changed with new ones as the treatment progresses so that they put the necessary pressure on your teeth to realign them.

Keep in mind that Invisalign treatment works best with mild dental issues. If your condition is too severe, this option might not be the best for you, and you would need to consider metal braces.

How Long Does the Invisalign Treatment Last?

The duration of the treatment depends on the severity of your condition. One of the advantages of getting Invisalign is that you can take them off for eating or cleaning them, but you will get better and faster results the more you keep the trays on. The ideal time is to have your trays from 20 to 22 hours each day.

If you take them off too much, the treatment will take longer, and it will be less effective.

You can start seeing results a few weeks after the treatment, and on average, it takes around 12 months to complete it.

How to Take Care of Your Invisalign?

While you go through an Invisalign treatment, you must keep correct oral hygiene to avoid any complications that can affect your oral health.

It is also important to keep your aligners clean to avoid any bacteria spreading around in your mouth.

  • Clean the aligners every morning and every night when you brush your teeth
  • Rinse the aligners every time you remove them
  • Avoid abrasive cleaning products and use the right ones for them
  • Soak your aligners every day
  • Do not eat with your aligners on
  • Store your Invisalign in their case
  • Brush your teeth the way your South Tampa cosmetic dentist instructed you to, every day

Invisalign has become popular, and it’s an option a lot of people consider in order to avoid feeling self-conscious about wearing traditional metal braces.

If your dentist has examined you and you are a good candidate for it, go ahead and get your beautiful, straight smile.
